Rare Earth or Neodymium magnets are the most powerful of permanent magnets and since the discovery of this rare earth mineral in the 1980s it has superseded traditional types of magnets in most commercial operations. This equal sided Neodymium block magnet fits into the cube magnet category. Often described as silver magnets for their chrome-like appearance, Neodymium magnets are usually Nickel plated. The coating helps to provide some resistance to corrosion however there are other coatings such as Gold, Teflon and Parylene-C that are more suitable for particularly humid environments. Another helpful aspect of the Nickel plating is that Neodymium magnets are easily identifiable as the silver surface is distinctive from other types of magnetic material which are generally darker in colour.
